Replace a Gateway MX3228 Laptop Keyboard?

The Gateway MX3228 is a low-cost laptop computer with a 14.1-inch widescreen display and an Intel Celeron M CPU. Several years have passed since this model's release, and you may find that the white letters have begun to chip off of the black plastic keys. Additionally, depending on the environments in which the laptop has been used, the keyboard assembly may have accumulated dust and grime. If the keyboard no longer performs as it once did or is too dirty for cleaning to be practical, you can remove it and replace it with a new one. Replacement keyboards were available from online retailers as of 2010.

Removal

Disconnect all peripheral devices. With the computer off, turn it over and remove the battery. Place the computer down on a work surface with the empty battery compartment facing toward you.

Unscrew the three Phillips-head screws from inside the empty battery compartment. Set the screws aside, and then turn the MX3228 notebook over and open the screen.

Use the flat-head screwdriver to gently pry the plastic button cover running along the top edge of the keyboard off of the MX3228. Release the plastic clips under the button cover carefully as you work from the left to right.

Place your hands along the bottom part of the Gateway MX3228 keyboard, and gently push the keyboard assembly toward the screen until the stabilizing tabs on the bottom of the keyboard assembly come out from under the palm rest. Lift the keyboard up slightly, and then place it upside-down on top of the palm rest.

Push the plastic lock on the front of the keyboard cable connector toward you to release the keyboard cable from the logic board. You may now remove the MX3228 keyboard completely and set it aside.

Install a new keyboard by reversing the steps used in removal.
